Bored Panda contacted Dennis in order to learn more about him and his comics. First of all, he wrote: “I am a designer and creative director by profession. I’ve spent a career running a branding firm serving national and international nonprofit clients. I’ve always drawn cartoons,” wrote Dennis.
Having all these other roles alongside his cartoonist work is impressive. So, we asked Dennis to share how these roles influence or complement each other in his creative endeavors.
“The creation of a cartoon is very much like the process of crafting a logo, meme, poster, or an ad. Each focuses on an easy-to-understand message. Cartoons point out the humor by looking at situations from different perspectives. 'Cartoon thinking' influences other professional work because looking for the humor in anything helps with an understanding of it.”
Dennis’ comics cover a wide range of topics. Therefore, we wanted to know what inspires his content creation.
He shared: “I focus on thoughts of the day, whether they be news, memories, or personal interactions with friends. The cartoons are a big creative outlet—especially the editorial and political commentaries.”
Though most artists have to deal with creative blocks and get stuck with their creative process, Dennis explained that he doesn’t struggle with it.
“I don’t really have creative blocks. But the times when I am not sure what to focus on, I just start drawing. This process leads me to an idea pretty quickly,” explained Dennis.
We also asked what Dennis would like for people to take away from his cartoons. He wrote: “I’d like people first to enjoy and be entertained by them. And second, to see a side of a situation they’ve not considered before.”
Lastly, he added: “I’d just like to say thank you for reading!”
