When asked why, she said simply: “I want to help somebody’s child go to college.”
She had never attended college herself. The donation made national news. Hundreds of people were moved by her story and contributed as well, more than tripling the original amount. McCarty lived long enough to see the first students receive the scholarships she made possible.

17-Year-Old Pulled A Man From A Burning Tent At A Hamilton Park Encampment
On the night of January 5, 2025, seventeen-year-old Zeke Fox was driving home from a friend’s house in Hamilton, Ontario, when he noticed black smoke near Bayfront Park.
He pulled over and found a tent on fire in an encampment. He heard a man calling for help. The tent then erupted into a fireball.
Fox ran to the tent, opened it, and found 53-year-old Shawn Goodwin trapped under a tarp with his clothes on fire. He pulled Goodwin out and rolled him in the snow to put out the flames. He had already called his parents to contact 911.
Goodwin was taken to hospital with severe burns. Fox was treated for smoke inhalation and minor injuries. The two later met and stayed in touch.
