You know the feeling when you’re watching or scrolling through something so interesting, you can’t keep your eyes off the screen? Well, this list isn’t going to be it. But for some inexplicable reason, you might be curious to browse it nevertheless.
Below you will find pictures of some of the most mundane and unexciting things ever, as shared by the ‘Not Interesting’ community on Reddit, dedicated to – you guessed it, “things that are not interesting at all.” If you’re looking forward to browsing them, firstly—and respectfully—why? Secondly, they’re at your fingertips, so whenever you’re ready.

You might be wondering what would make people interested in browsing such seemingly non-interesting things. One possible reason for that is likely to be something we have been trying to combat for years now—boredom.

Arising from lack of interest, stimulation, or challenge, as some studies explain, boredom can make us take on the most random tasks. Some people start deep cleaning their closet (something that stops looking like a good idea the second you have everything taken out), while others might turn to playing video games, but for many, it’s scrolling that helps chase the boredom away.

A survey carried out among American respondents found that the average adult experiences 131 days of boredom per year, with work, parenting, and other full-time responsibilities sapping the fun out of their lives the most.

Respondents shared that when it comes to fighting boredom, gamified activities, or activities with a natural ‘play’ component—such as bowling or arcade games—are great ways to do it. As for what stands in the way of people successfully combating boredom, entertainment costs, low energy level, and too much work seem to be the main culprits.

But, even though it rarely ever looks that way, boredom can actually be good for you… Sometimes. Even though our goal is to fight it—and fight, we will!—some studies suggest that boredom can positively affect our brains. Forbes notes that, according to some neuroscientists, it can amp up our creativity, task engagement, and job productivity.

While it might sound counterintuitive, researchers suggest that in combination with the right job resources, boredom at work can lead to productive coping behaviors.

However, not only seemingly boring or mundane tasks can have a surprisingly positive side. Pictures can, too!

According to the Association For Psychological Science, research shows that even though we often focus on special occasions, everyday moments caught on camera can bring us immense joy when we look at them later in life, too.

“We generally do not think about today’s ordinary moments as experiences that are worthy of being rediscovered in the future. However, our studies show that we are often wrong: What is ordinary now actually becomes more extraordinary in the future—and more extraordinary than we might expect,” psychological scientist and lead researcher Ting Zhang of Harvard Business School explained.

“People find a lot of joy in rediscovering a music playlist from months ago or an old joke with a neighbor, even though those things did not seem particularly meaningful in the moment,” Zhang continued to point out. “The studies highlight the importance of not taking the present for granted and documenting the mundane moments of daily life to give our future selves the joy of rediscovering them.”

Imagine holding a picture of yourself as a young adult, enjoying a BBQ with your friends in the summer sun. Or sitting on the sofa with your spouse, hopelessly in love even after 40 years of marriage, doing nothing but reading books and drinking tea. Despite being somewhat unremarkable, don’t such moments in everyday life sound special?

Whether it’s reading with your loved one on the sofa or being bored out of your mind at work, enjoy this mundane moment, as you might look back at it with a big smile on your face some years later. And if you want to see other people enjoying their mundane moments, continue browsing the pictures on this list that have absolutely nothing interesting about them, and embrace the ordinary and the unexceptional—it’s not often that we see posts online that are not embellished even the slightest bit.
