The Nature Photographer of the Year is held annually by Nature Talks, which is the organization behind the annual Nature Talks Photo Festival. The winner is awarded a €3000 prize and the runner-ups are awarded photo equipment. The winning images are also exhibited in the Netherlands, Belgium, and France.
To find out more about the Nature Photographer Of The Year 2020 competition, Bored Panda reached out to the representative Lesley de Beer, who said that this year’s competition was different due to the pandemic. “Normally the judges meet for two days to discuss the submitted photographs and decided what made it into the finals. But this year, it wasn’t possible due to Covid-19, and therefore we did multiple online meetings.”
But online meetups have their own challenges. “Internet quality, broadcast delay, multiple people talking simultaneously were among the challenges, but we managed to make it work.”
The jury selected the best photographs according to strict criteria. “Jury exclusively judge photos that are anonymous and show no name or personal watermark in the image. Moreover, manipulated images that are clearly exaggerated will be disqualified."
#4 Category Man And Nature: Winner, 'Hope In A Burned Forest' By Jo-Anne Mcarthur

#5 Category Mammals: Highly Commended, 'Golden Light With Impala' By Artur Stankiewicz

#6 Category Mammals: Runner-Up, 'Splash!!!' By Antonio Leiva Sanchez

Lesley de Beer also said that the jury received submissions that were clearly fraud. “We have seen images with animals that don't live in particular parts of the world but have been taken on camera. Since that's not possible, we deleted those fraud images which maybe, at first glance, we thought that the shot was outstanding.”
Lesley added that it’s important to have a panel of experts, “like underwater and marine photographers who could double-check if life underwater in the image is legit.” In fact, people try many different things to win NPOTY, so this year, the organizers used high-tech software to see if files were manipulated.
The representative of the Nature Photographer Of The Year 2020 also said that the jury noticed a new negative trend where “many people make photos only for the likes on social sites instead of taking care of 'nature.'”

#8 Overall Winner: 'Jurassic Park' By Roberto Marchegiani

#9 Category Birds: Highly Commended, 'Lone Egret Among Fall Colors Of The Cypress Swamp' By Rick Beldegreen

Lesley concluded that nature photography reveals that “humans still haven't revealed all the secrets of nature.” He continued: “Just have a look at the winner of the category Other Animals. It’s so amazing to learn new behavior out there which we didn't know before. Visual stories tell us so much and give us hope.”
“We humans always survive, but nature needs help from us, and what we are doing to the world right now doesn't help at all. To see such amazing photos make you think we need to take a step forward soon.”
