Since we’re on the topic of creepy historic occurrences, one that continues to boggle modern society is the seeming accuracy of Nostradamus’s predictions. The famed prophet has been credited with foreseeing numerous events, including natural disasters, wars, and, most recently, the demise of Pope Francis.

But if you read his writings, you will notice how they are mostly grim, cryptic, and vague. His supposed 16th-century prophecy of Pope Francis’s passing reads:
“Through the death of a very old Pontiff… a Roman of good age will be elected. Of him it will be said that he weakens his see… but long will he sit and in biting activity.”

However, the ambiguity of his writings is believed to be intentional, according to Dr. Michelle Pfeffer, a research fellow at the University of Oxford. In her article for The Conversation, Dr. Pfeffer noted that “political prophecy was a high-risk business.”
She further explained that astrologers were usually expelled from Ancient Rome for making grim predictions about emperors and Renaissance leaders. To avoid upsetting the leaders of the time, Nostradamus was vague with his predictions.

So, what exactly draws us to mysterious images? What about them makes us want to dig deeper and know more? Photographer J. Riley Stewart provided a straightforward explanation: mystery activates our imagination, and an active imagination makes an image more engaging.
“As long as our brain perceives the mystery as something worth resolving, it will continue trying to resolve it using imagination,” Stewart stated.

Stewart also provided context on why a photograph can be mysteriously attractive, mentioning the concept of obfuscation. Simply put, it’s the process of making certain aspects of a picture slightly more obscure. As Stewart points out, it “confuses our lizard brains” and “causes our creative brains to solve the mystery.”
“These artistic techniques force our imaginations to try to clarify the obscured elements, and in the process, keep our imaginations churning,” he noted.
