I see myself as an interdisciplinary artist. I am a seamstress, sculptor, costume designer and photographer. The ‘menina’ of Velasquez, Arnolfini’s pregnant wife in the Van Eyck portrait, and Rogier van der Weyden’s veiled ‘lady’: I try them to bring them to life in my photographic portraits. This nod to the old masters of the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries - certainly also to Rembrandt and Vermeer - is only one aspect of my work. It is all about tranquillity, timelessness, beauty. Qualities I discover even in disposable material such as packing foam and tin, with which I design the costumes for my models. And so layer after layer accumulates in my oeuvre, contrast after contrast. Between classic and modern, light and dark, life experience and childlike innocence.
On November 3th of this year my new book will be published, ‘Moving through contrast’. To finance this project I’ve started a crowdfunding together with my gallery. Two Special Editions are being issued. These consist of the book, packed in a beautiful sleeve, together with one original photoprint of app 29x23 cm. The special subscription price is € 350,-. And the total proceeds will be spent on the realization of this special book.
In 2018 I was asked by Pierpoalo Piccioli, the creative director of Valentino, to make 3 campaign photographs for his capsule collection of the Genius project of Moncler. Piccioli sought serenity and purity and gave me artistic carte blanche. I transformed the models into religious icons, who could have stepped straight out of a Renaissance painting. These photos are now presented together with a dress of this collection in the exhibition 'Modest Fashion' in Stedelijk Museum Schiedam.
