After 10 years of waiting, my neighbour's fennel plant finally came into flower. Naturally, she was over the moon!
To commemorate this once in a decade event, she asked if I wouldn’t mind photographing the plant before its flowers died off. I suggested we make a set of portraits of her alongside the plant to have as a keepsake. She was really keen on the idea, so we agreed on a time when the light would work well for a portrait shoot, and met in her garden.
I didn’t have far to travel, as she lives literally next door – the main thing we had to watch was that we both kept at a safe distance from each other. So over the course of the shoot, we danced around each other to make sure that we were always at least two meters away.
My neighbour is a wonderful human being and a keen horticulturist. She sees a lot of positives coming through this time that the world is on pause, however as she lives by herself with just her cat for company, so she really misses human contact.
Spending this time together felt like a really nice opportunity for us to connect and create a lasting memory.
