“My mother says…” is a Singaporean publication documenting old wives tales in a light hearted manner through the medium of photography and personal recounts.
Aside from the traditional manner of using these tales as “precautionary” measures/warning signs, the publication aims to present these tales in a tongue-in-cheek and comical manner, highlighting the relatable nature of these tales in our everyday lives. These tales have probably been told to us so many times yet more often than not many of us do not pay attention to the logic of the actual tales except for the fact that they usually embody a certain moral or learning point.
These tales have been passed down from generation to generation and are specific to every family; different families will have different collections of these tales. “My mother says…” aims to document these different tales into an easily relatable book with a local flavour, one that reminisces on these tales as a pertinent reminder and reflection of our roots and culture.
In complement with “My Mother Says...”, a limited run of “My Father Says...” was produced for promotional and event purposes. “My Father Says...” is an empty sketchbook as a tongue in cheek comment that the father says nothing as his version of ‘wisdom’.
