My boyfriend was planning on rushing to the store to pick up our usual haul. A pack of cigarettes, one beer for each of us, and perhaps some snacks. Nothing particularly noteworthy, but still enjoyable.
He gets in the car and prepares to drive away, but I guess he had forgotten his wallet or something because he parked, left the door open, and then casually walked back inside to retrieve it. When he opened the front door, Lucy, our dog, immediately ran outside. Be mindful. Right now, Lucy, my dog, has a very aggressive cancer. She can hardly move at all, and I will likely have to put her down soon. She literally ran out of gas despite her condition. Even in her state, she ran straight to the car, opened the driver door, and jumped inside before collapsing on the floor board. We both go look into it. When we get to the car, she was wearing the key lanyard around her neck. To prevent her from choking, we immediately turn off the car and unwrap the lanyard from around her neck. We simply stare at one another in confusion.
Our dog, who hardly ever stands up to use the restroom outside, just ran and jumped in the car, nearly choking herself. Weird. Even stranger, she steadfastly refused to budge. Treats. Not interested at all. Pet her and politely request that she stand up for us. Nope, not a centimeter's worth of movement. When I attempted to gently tap her shoulder, she dead weighted herself. She is aware that a shoulder nudge on any other day of the week signals rising. Two hours ago, that was no longer true. We eventually caved after she simply kept staring at us with intensity. The trip to the store can wait; don't interfere with her; just leave her alone.
We didn't want to push her too much because she has a tumour the size of a softball growing off her stomach. wanted to avoid agitating her or the tumour. So it's okay, we'll just wait and chat until she gets the urge to stand. She got up a half hour later when we were both out of sight and casually returned inside.
My dog is familiar to me. She wasn't acting normally, and I had a strange gut instinct that my man wasn't supposed to go to town when he was trying to. She undoubtedly saved his life in some way because there was clearly something wrong. She did, even though she wasn't sure exactly how or what he was shielded from. My partner would not..
