Why We Grumble More on Mondays and How to Shake Off the Blues
Ever get that hankering to grunt and grumble through those Monday hitches? Don’t fret, you aren’t alone. Moaning about everything on Mondays is pretty "normal." Mondays, after all, are notorious for making people feel grumpy.
In a 2023 article for Thefactsite, writer and fact-checker Jack De Graaf reports that the average person moans for 34 minutes on a Monday, compared to 22 minutes on other days (1). So, while we can't move time around, releasing all the grumpiness will lighten and brighten up your Monday mood. Trust that the next day will be better.
The Science of Monday Hate
Researchers in a 2020 study published in Human Relations Journal (2) say it’s no surprise that employees experience lower levels of job satisfaction and higher levels of workplace stressors at the beginning of the week than at the end.
Our impressions of Mondays are science-based, primarily ushered in by Sunday night anxiety. Neuropsychologist and psychoanalyst at NYU Langone Health Dr. Susanne Cooperman, in a 2017 interview with NBC News, explained that the Sunday Scaries, or blues, can be a byproduct of anticipating the week ahead (3).
Dr. Cooperman added that the adrenal glands are on top of the kidneys. They release adrenaline and cortisol, which flood the system and create a biological stress reaction that feels like natural anxiety. In other words, the “Monday Blues” exacerbate the “Sunday Scaries,” increasing stress hormones and causing a physiological aversion to Monday mornings.
Making Mondays Work in Your Favor
With Mondays being almost unbearable, we often wonder if there are ways to still hit the ground running at the top of the week. Bonnie Evie Gifford writes in a 2022 feature for Happyful that preparing for Monday can undoubtedly set us up for a more successful week (4).
While you can’t always help how your weekend goes or how it will make you feel when Monday comes, you can give yourself a more leisurely start by being prepared.
Gifford says that creating a to-do list on Friday for the following week can help you feel more in control when Monday rolls around. Clearing your old to-do list can also help you feel more in control as you’ll spend less time sorting tasks and information that could slow you down.
