Scientists have added the monarch butterfly to the endangered list due to its rapidly declining numbers. “It’s just a devastating decline,” Stuart Pimm, an ecologist at Duke University said.
The International Union for the Conservation of Nature has added the 'migrating monarch butterfly' to its 'red list' of threatened species for the first time. and categorized it as endangered -- two steps from extinction.
It has been estimated by the group that the population of monarch butterflies in North America has declined between 22% and 72% over the last decade, depending on the measurement method.
