I'm sure I'm not the only one to ever look at an artwork, craft, or design and imagine what the material would feel like in reality. Soft? Rough? Will the paint become fabric if I touch? Sometimes the spirit of temptation is too powerful for my saintly soul to endure, and so I surreptitiously finger the blameless artwork. When I see pictures on billboards and posters I wonder: Is that dress as tender as it appears? Will it really allow the air caress and shape it in such a precise manner?
What is the point of my epistle? I like art with body. Even if I can't touch, I like the illusion that if I did stretch out my recalcitrant digits I would feel something more. Perhaps that is why multi material art is so popular. People want to employ as many sense organs as possible in the appreciation of art.
And what about me? For my Mixed Media Woman Art Collection I use natural and faux hair, vintage African material, and paint to bring my designs to life. Seduced by the art of creating 'see and feel' designs, I illustrate figures made of fabric, paper, buttons, hair, sand, and other ingredients for designs that feed the eyes and satisfy the sense of touch.
