In June of 2022, the U.S overturned Roe V. Wade, and while many began marching for the rights of women to be restored across the world, it was considered a sin for a Catholic to join in the stand for the rights to an abortion as it was considered 'taking an innocent life'. Three months later, a new voice stepped onto the scene from inside of the Catholic Church. Under the alias of Zuri Ohama, a young high school student is attending mass every Sunday, but standing against one of the church's core beliefs.
She performed her speech in September, speaking to the 'men in power'. "Men in power will never know it's like to be pregnant, so why are we allowing them to make these decisions?". Many Catholics reacted to Ohama's speech withraised eyebrows.
Some asking her why she still takes communion as it holds the power of holding the same beliefs as the church, and she gave the answer, "I'll wait for God to tell me what's right and what's wrong. Until then, nobody can tell me what church I'm allowed to step foot in, and what prayers I'm allowed to pray. I'm a Catholic until I step out and say I'm otherwise."
President Joe Biden was asked to stop taking the Catholic holy communion, and bishops even proposed a document to refuse the eucharist from the president after he spoke on his high priority goal to make abortions legal and accessible across the U.S. Even though the document fell short from being accepted, it's still a controversy as to why Joe Biden still takes part in the sacrament of the holy eucharist.
Zuri Ohama,17, is discovered to be American-Nigerian, and is making changes in African countries after changing her name in order to protect her complete identity, but as her controversial stance gets bigger, it's bound to start an international conversation.
While across Africa, abortions aren't predominantly legal in most countries, and her reputation in her own descendent country is of mixed emotion.
