For most mothers, the task of disentangling a child's hair can be arduous, especially when the child simply does not cooperate. For Shilah Calvert Yin, age 7, however, the process of combing is absolutely impossible.
Shilah of Melbourne, Australia, suffers from a rare problem called the hair-thinning syndrome. This means that your blond curls can not be tamed. It is said that the syndrome
affects about 100 people in the world.
Until 9 months ago, the country of Shilah had no idea about the existence of this problem. One can only imagine the years of struggle to put a comb through that mane and deal with all the looks of strange people who probably thought that the parents let the girl walk with her hair tousled.
Supposedly, the syndrome is caused by a mutation of one of the three PADI3, TGM3 and TCHH genes. Although there is no cure for this condition, there is hope that it will improve as Shilah ages.
