In our ever changing modern technological world, connecting with each other, is easier and quicker than ever. Though, with technology taking up more and more of each and everyday, disconnect also becomes easier.
Mechner's music video "Surfacing" touches on this fact. In the opening scene, we see a group of people crowded around a table in a cozy pub. Our main character "Paul" is staring off into space, apparently day dreaming. When he snaps out of it, he leans to his friend "Mike", to strike up a conversation. When Mike and the rest of the table completely ignore Paul, he decides in annoyance to leave. What unfolds after, is chilling and satirical, it may serve as a grounded message to everyone on the pitfalls of modern life, and that no matter how hard an individual tries to ignore it, everyone is susceptible to the endless rabbit hole of information.
It is best watched, and not spoiled.
The music and the visual sit together tightly, to create a foreboding and unsettling atmosphere. Lethargic drum patterns, never ending acoustic arpeggios intertwined with highly strung electric guitars almost nearing electronic static. Dystopian delayed vocals sit uneasily together, creating discord in the listener. It feels like an unsolved mystery.
With the singer sarcastically asking the question "So What?" and "How long can this go on?"
It comes across as "David Lynch meets Radiohead with sprinklings of Black Mirror"
For some it may be a wake up call, for others it may be meta, for some, they might not get the intention of the video, and that.... is the scariest prospect of all.
