Finding a good, reliable car mechanic is like striking gold. Once you find someone you can trust with your vehicle, you want to hold on to them for dear life. After all, nobody wants to leave their car in the wrong hands and end up with even more problems than they started with.
Unfortunately, one Redditor couldn’t rely on his usual mechanic for a particular repair, so he had to turn to another shop. There, he was met with rude employees who made the entire experience a nightmare. But karma had other plans, arranging an incredibly lucky encounter with the company’s vice president that ended up turning everything around.
One man had a nightmare experience with rude mechanics who made getting his car repaired far more stressful than it needed to be
Luckily, fate intervened in the most unexpected way, helping him turn the tables and get some well-deserved justice
Most drivers don’t fully trust car mechanics, research shows
Anyone who’s ever owned a car knows that tracking down a reliable mechanic is no small feat. In a sea of repair shops, plenty will try to squeeze every last dollar out of you, others will fake their expertise, and just a handful will turn out to be the honest pros you were hoping for.
With that in mind, it’s hardly surprising that many car owners are cautious about who they hand their keys to. In fact, a ConsumerAffairs survey of 1,000 American drivers found that 78% don’t always have confidence in mechanics.
For 69% of respondents, it depended on the particular person working on their vehicle, while only 22% said they always trusted those handling their repairs.
After all, taking your car to a repair shop isn’t exactly like popping into a grocery store. The bill can be pretty hefty, even when you’re just keeping up with regular maintenance.
According to AAA’s Your Driving Costs study, maintenance, repairs, and tires cost an estimated 11 cents per mile. For someone driving 15,000 miles annually, that works out to roughly $1,650 a year.
And if you’ve been in an accident, the costs can climb much higher. A report by CCC Intelligent Solutions found that the average cost of repairs for vehicles involved in repairable insurance claims had reached approximately $4,768.
To find a reliable mechanic, experts recommend doing a little homework before handing over your keys
So, how do you find someone who will actually take good care of your car? John Ibbotson, chief mechanic at Consumer Reports’ Auto Test Center, suggests asking around. “The best way to tell if the shop is a good bet is by word of mouth from people who have used and been happy with its service,” he explained.
And when it comes to repair shops, don’t judge a book by its cover. “Lots of shops and national chains have big, beautiful facilities. Furthermore, many of them are very highly rated for their customer service,” said Kathleen Long, chief revenue officer at RepairPal. However, she warned that they may not be charging their customers a fair price.
To avoid unpleasant surprises when the bill arrives, it’s a good idea to request a written estimate before agreeing to any work. Make sure it clearly breaks down the cost of parts and labor so you know exactly what you’re paying for.
It’s also worth paying attention to how the employees communicate with you. A reliable professional should be happy to explain what’s happening with your vehicle and keep you updated if plans change. If getting a simple answer feels like pulling teeth, you might want to think twice before leaving your car in their hands.
Unfortunately, the Redditor in this story had already learned that lesson the hard way. But just when his patience was running out, fate decided to step in.
During a flight home, he struck up a casual conversation with the stranger sitting beside him, only to discover that the man was the regional vice president of the company handling his repairs.
Talk about being in the right place at the right time! After hearing his complaints, the executive looked into the situation and took action. The company eventually cut ties with the subcontractor, and the mechanic responsible for the trouble lost his job, along with his manager.
If only the universe could arrange such perfectly timed encounters whenever we needed a little help. Unfortunately, most of us will have to rely on our own judgment when choosing who gets to work on our cars.
How much do you trust mechanics? Have you found someone you’d never dream of replacing? And what would you have done if you were in this Redditor’s shoes?
