Getting married to someone means agreeing on the future you want to build together. It means sharing hopes for the life ahead and working toward plans you both believe in. Discovering that your partner has been lying about a major part of that future can leave you with serious doubts about the life you’re planning together.
This man thought he and his fiancé were on the same page about their life after the wedding. Then, a conversation he wasn’t meant to hear revealed that he’d been lying about their plans for 3 years. With their wedding just 2 weeks away, he’s now questioning whether he can still say “I do.”
Being honest about major life decisions helps couples avoid painful surprises down the line

A shared future only works when both partners are honest about what they want
Making big decisions as a couple means discussing things like whether to have children, where to settle down, how to manage money, and whose career might take priority when opportunities arise. These choices can shape both partners’ lives for years, so it’s important to be upfront about what you want and what you’re willing to compromise on.
Marriage experts encourage couples to have these conversations before marriage so they can identify potential disagreements early and understand what each person expects from the relationship.
Being upfront also gives your partner the chance to decide whether your goals align with theirs. If you’re certain you want to settle down in one place while your partner hopes to move elsewhere, keeping your preference to yourself deprives them of the chance to make an informed decision about your shared future.
Honest communication, respect for boundaries, and keeping your word are essential to building trust in a marriage. This means being willing to be open about what you really want, even when you worry your partner might disagree or want something different.
Avoiding these conversations might seem easier in the moment, especially when you’re afraid of losing the relationship. But allowing someone to invest years in a future you know you don’t want can leave them feeling misled and robbed of the chance to choose for themselves.
Both partners deserve to make that choice with their eyes open, instead of discovering after a major commitment that they were never working toward the same goal.
Couples shouldn’t ignore serious problems just because their wedding is around the corner
When a major lie comes to light in a relationship, the hurt can go deeper than the original issue. Someone may begin wondering what else they’ve been misled about and whether they can still rely on their partner’s word.
According to psychologist Ramone Ford, PhD, repairing a relationship requires accountability, honest communication, and meaningful behavior changes. An apology can be a starting point, but the person who broke the trust must show they understand the impact of their actions.
For couples facing serious disagreements about their future, premarital counseling can help them talk through difficult issues and work out whether their goals are compatible. A counselor can give both partners space to express what they want and consider whether they can reach an agreement they’re both comfortable with.
Relationship expert Terrence Patterson, EdD, ABPP, explains that serious relationship conflicts may require direct conversations and professional guidance to help couples decide how to move forward. Some differences can be negotiated, while others may be too significant for one partner to compromise on without resentment.
With the wedding just two weeks away, postponing it could mean dealing with disappointment, expenses, and difficult conversations with family. But having already paid for a wedding or guests doesn’t mean a couple has to go through with it while serious doubts remain.
A major lie can bring deeper questions about trust and compatibility to the surface, and those deserve to be dealt with before making a lifelong commitment. Ultimately, the couple has to decide whether they can rebuild trust and agree on the future they both want. The wedding may be only two weeks away, but the decision to marry will affect them for years.
