Seattle-based photographer Brian Weiss and I were inspired to create this photo series after stumbling upon Kikkerland's adorable set of woodland pencils. Over five studio sessions we created four unique paper environments for the pencils to be photographed.
We imagined what it would look like to catch these critters in their natural environments. Given that these are pencils we thought it only made sense that their world should be made of paper.
After we finished photographing each woodland pencil in their habitat we wanted to take the narrative further by taking their portraits. Each pencil was photographed against a hand-crafted paper background that reflected the environment they were previously seen in.
These portraits are then imagined as framed pictures hung on a cabin wall, as if a park ranger, wildlife enthusiast, or perhaps a budding photographer captured these moments and now regards them on quiet evenings in their home.
