Everyone Has An Opinion On Lindsay Clancy, Here Is What A Psychologist Actually Says

On the evening of January 24, 2023, Patrick Clancy called 911 from his home in Duxbury, Massachusetts. He told the dispatcher his wife had hurt their children and herself. First responders arrived to find her three children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and 8-month-old Callan, strangled with resistance bands. Clancy herself had jumped from a second-floor window and sustained severe spinal injuries that left her paralyzed. But if you have spent any time on the internet lately, you know all of this. Hell, you might even have your own delicious theories about what happened. Because most of us have a gruesome fascination with such scandals - we're either horrified, interested or both, but no matter what, we can't look away. What we're less fascinated with is digging a bit deeper, when we have to ask deeply difficult questions about mental illness, about accountability, and about motherhood. The jury that sat through weeks of evidence could not agree on the answer. A mistrial was declared on September 4, 2026. But right on cue, the internet had no such difficulty reaching a verdict. Was Lindsay Clancy a mother in the grip of a psychiatric emergency she had no control over? Was she a woman who made a devastating and unforgivable choice? Can both of those things be true simultaneously, and if so, what does the law do with that? Bored Panda spoke exclusively to registered psychologist Amberley Meredith and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Michael Kane to help us make sense of a case that has broken open some of the most uncomfortable conversations of the year, and found that the real failure happened long before the case ever reached a jury. AlecLace The public conversation has consistently blurred postpartum psychosis with postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety in ways that are both medically inaccurate and, as we will get to, actively harmful to women who are struggling. Postpartum depression affects approximately 10 to 15% of new mothers. It involves persistent low mood, exhaustion, withdrawal, and difficulty bonding. It is serious, and it is treatable. Postpartum anxiety is similarly common, involving intrusive thoughts, hypervigilance, and fear. Both conditions require support and professional care. Neither is the same as postpartum psychosis. Postpartum psychosis is rare, affecting approximately one to two women per thousand births. It typically emerges within the first two weeks after delivery and can involve hallucinations, delusions, mania, extreme confusion, and a complete break from reality. It is considered a psychiatric emergency. Women experiencing it are often unaware of what is happening to them. The break from their normal perception of the world can be total. Dr. Michael Kane is a board-certified psychiatrist with more than 35 years of experience treating mental health and substance use disorders. He explained to Bored Panda that while a woman's severe psychotic episode can greatly impede her ability to assess reality, use appropriate judgment, and perceive the world around her, this does not mean she is merely chemically driven or under the control of hormones. "The important psychiatric issue here is which particular cognitive functions have been lost, and how much of her agency has been compromised. Is she still able to tell the difference between reality and a delusional belief? Has her thinking become disorganized? Agency cannot be classified as simply being present or absent when a serious illness such as psychosis exists." The defense in the Clancy case argued that she was experiencing postpartum psychosis, exacerbated by a combination of medications prescribed by her doctors, at the time of the killings. The prosecution argued she was sane and acted deliberately. The jury could not agree on which of those framings was correct, or what the correct legal outcome of either conclusion should be. This is not the first time a case of this nature has reached a courtroom. Andrea Yates, who drowned her five children in a bathtub in Texas in 2001, was convicted of capital murder in 2002 before that conviction was overturned on appeal in 2005. She was retried in 2006, found not guilty by reason of insanity, and committed to a psychiatric facility where she remains. The Andrea Yates trial, which people have been referencing in discussions of the Clancy case as a comparable precedent, followed a similar trajectory. This legal territory has been navigated before. The Clancy case is not rewriting the law. It is testing it again, in a different state, with a different jury, and a significantly more volatile public audience than any earlier cases had to contend with. Sianna, RobynKam, Destinee’ K The public split on Lindsay Clancy is one of the cleaner illustrations of what Amberley Meredith, a registered psychologist, describes as cognitive dissonance. Amberley has more than 25 years of experience supporting individuals through trauma, long-term health conditions, and complex life experiences, so her views come from a place of deep understanding. "Someone can have behaved lovingly at one point and caused enormous harm at another," she explains. "Trying to accommodate both realities can create significant psychological discomfort, and sometimes it is easier to move towards one end of the story or the other." Motherhood carries expectations so powerful that when they are violated, the mind reaches urgently for an explanation that restores order. For one group, that explanation is demonization. For another, it is complete absolution through illness. Both responses are understandable, but neither gives the full picture. The theory that Patrick was somehow responsible, or that his behavior before the tragedy was relevant to what happened, circulated extensively online. His timing, his outfits, his eyes, all put under the microscope. His subsequent public statements of forgiveness toward his wife were dissected for hidden meaning. He was, in the way the internet assigns roles, cast as the real villain of a story that already had a devastating amount of tragedy in it without requiring one. There is no evidence that Patrick Clancy caused or contributed to what happened. His then-wife's medical team, her defense, and the prosecution all operated within a framework that did not implicate him. The public framework was not similarly constrained. gofundme At the other end of the spectrum, a significant community of women rallied around Lindsay Clancy with a fervor that occasionally lost sight of the three children who died. A GoFundMe for her parents passed $1.1 million by the end of the trial. Support groups formed online but also rallied outside the court. The conversation sometimes proceeded as though the children were incidental to the story of their mother's suffering, which is a difficult position to defend when two of them were old enough to have memories and a life outside that house. Anna Gutierrez/Unsplash (not the actual photo) A vocal group argued that the postpartum psychosis defense, and the broader framing of Clancy as a victim of her own hormonal and chemical state, was anti-feminist. Women, this argument goes, spent decades fighting to be taken seriously as autonomous agents, not as creatures subject to their biology. Using hormones and medication as a defense reduces a woman to her body chemistry in exactly the way feminism has worked to move past. It is a serious argument. It deserves to be engaged with rather than dismissed. And it is also, in this specific context, incomplete. Because postpartum psychosis is not a metaphor for being emotional or hormonal. It is a documented psychiatric condition that has been recognized in medical literature for over a century, that has a measurable neurological basis, and that has, in documented cases throughout history, led women with no prior history of violence and no apparent motive to commit acts entirely inconsistent with their character and their stated love for their children. The feminist framework that says women must be held fully accountable for their actions is correct in most contexts. It runs into difficulty in the specific context of a condition that, by its clinical definition, involves a break from reality so complete that the person experiencing it is not operating within a normal framework of agency. Meredith is careful about how she frames this: "It's not so simple as saying the medication or hormones did it. That's a rather simplistic summary of an intensely complex situation." She is right that the reductive version of the defense, the one that circulates on social media as a clear explanation, misrepresents both the medical complexity and the legal question. But the existence of a reductive version does not invalidate the underlying medical reality. The more useful feminist question, she suggests, is not about culpability at all. It is about systems. "Do we have sufficient services that are capable of understanding the complexity, approaching people with compassion and providing a secure environment? Our systems are often primarily designed around reacting once someone is already in crisis." Lindsay Clancy had been seen by multiple medical professionals in the weeks before the killings. She had been prescribed multiple medications. She had reported symptoms. The system that was supposed to catch someone deteriorating this severely did not catch her in time. Boston 25 News David Marumbao made headlines when he announced that he had ended his engagement after his partner expressed the view that Lindsay Clancy was innocent and, by his account, showed no sympathy for the children who died. "I can't believe I was gonna get married to a monster," he said. "I asked my ex what she thinks about the case of Clancy. She told me that she's innocent." The story spread quickly because it captured, in miniature, the way the Clancy case was functioning as a kind of values test in relationships and social circles. What you thought about Lindsay Clancy was being read as a signal about what you thought about motherhood, about mental illness, about women, about accountability. The problem with using a case this complex as a litmus test is that it punishes nuance. Someone who believes Lindsay Clancy was experiencing a genuine psychiatric emergency at the time of the killings is not necessarily someone who has no sympathy for the children. Someone who believes she should face legal consequences is not necessarily someone who dismisses mental illness. The case contains enough complexity to support multiple serious positions simultaneously, and the people holding those positions are not automatically monsters or apologists. What Marumbao described, if accurate, is a partner who genuinely lacked empathy for three dead children, which is a reasonable concern in a relationship. What he may have been responding to, though, is someone who had arrived at a position on a complicated case without the language to articulate it in a way that left room for the grief. "A woman already struggling with postpartum depression or anxiety may become frightened by her own mental health," she says. "What if I become worse? What if having this thought means something terrible about me? What if I'm not safe? That fear can add fuel to an already burning fire of self-doubt at a time when many women are already questioning whether they are coping or whether they are a good enough mother." Postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety are not the same as postpartum psychosis. Experiencing dark or frightening thoughts after having a baby, which is more common than most people know and which health professionals specifically screen for, does not make a woman dangerous. The intrusive thoughts that many new mothers experience, thoughts they find horrifying and do not want to act on, are distressing precisely because they are so contrary to the mother's actual feelings and intentions. They are a symptom of anxiety, not a signal of intent. When the public conversation repeatedly connects maternal mental illness with extreme violence, it raises the barrier for every struggling mother who might otherwise seek help. If asking for help means being perceived as a potential threat to your own children, many women will choose not to ask. And the consequences of that choice can be severe, not for others, but for the women themselves, who suffer in silence through conditions that are treatable. When asked about the “mental illness made her do it” narrative, Dr. Kane warns that "the narrative could increase stigmatization and reduce willingness to disclose symptoms." "If women start to believe that disclosing disturbing thoughts will immediately be interpreted by Clinicians as an indicator of potential danger, then she will likely conceal symptoms rather than seek treatment. We need clearer language: an intrusive thought is not equivalent to intent. Also, having a mental health disorder does not equate to being inherently dangerous." "We need to find the balance where mental illness isn't used as a blanket explanation for every harmful act," Amberley added, "but neither does fear of being labeled dangerous and judged without context stop someone from saying, 'Something isn't right, and I need help.'" CBS Boston A mistrial is not an acquittal. The Commonwealth can retry the case, and if it does, it will do so with the knowledge of how a jury responded the first time. The prosecution will have the opportunity to reconsider how it argues its position. The defense will do the same. This has been a very traumatic focus group. What the jury's inability to reach a verdict tells us is that eleven jurors reached one conclusion and a twelfth would not join them on what justice looked like in this case. That is not a failure of the jury. It is an accurate reflection of the difficulty of the questions involved. When does mental illness constitute a defense? What does accountability look like when the person who committed the act may not have been, in any meaningful sense, present in the way we normally understand presence? What do we owe the children who died, and what do we owe a woman who, if the defense is correct, has to live with what happened in a body that no longer works, with a mind that has returned to full awareness of what occurred during the time it was not fully her own? These are not questions with clean answers. The jury knew that. Meredith's final point is the one worth carrying out of this case regardless of what happens in a potential retrial: "What we do with that understanding next. Can it lead to better conversations about prevention? What could help us get ahead of situations where someone is deteriorating? What support is available to families?" Three children died in Duxbury in 2023. Their mother is paralyzed and awaiting a possible second trial. Their father has publicly forgiven her and is raising the question of what healing looks like in circumstances this devastating. The systems that were supposed to intervene before any of this happened did not. The verdict the jury could not deliver is less important than the question of what we build so that the next jury never has to be convened.
