The cliche "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" isn't usually taken literally, however in the case of Kintsugi, well, it's true.
Kintsugi, the Japanese art of mending broken pottery using lacquer and powdered gold, leaves the pottery not only more durable but just gorgeous.
This art originated during the Muromachi period. The story is that the emperor Ashikaga Yoshimasa dropped his prized cup. Many attempted to repair his cup until a ceramist had the idea to glue the parts together and dust it with gold.
Emperor Yoshimasa commended the result - the cup had become anew, and its beautiful imperfections not only strengthened it but made it unique. ("THE KINTSUGI ART: HISTORY OF JAPAN UNDER ASHIGAKA YOSHIMASA")
These beautiful works of art teach us that our struggles only make us stronger and beautifully unique.
