Taking a family member in when they have nowhere else to go is often the right thing to do. But things can get complicated when expectations about chores, money, and responsibilities start to come into play.
This woman took to the internet for advice after housing her 18-year-old niece for two years and deciding it was time for her to take on more responsibility at home. However, the teen was far from happy with the new arrangement. Read on to see how the situation unfolded.
Helping a family member can come with expectations on both sides

Young adults living with family may face tension over independence and household responsibilities
For young adults who rely on relatives for housing and financial support, the arrangement can come with friction. Research on adult children who move back in with their parents has found that many of their disagreements center on money, privacy, housework, and how much say parents have in their lives.
These disagreements can be harder to navigate when young adults are trying to become more independent but still depend heavily on family support. Pew Research Center found that just 16% of 18- to 24-year-olds in its 2023 survey considered themselves completely financially independent from their parents, while 68% had received some financial help from them in the previous year.
That support can also come with an expectation that the recipient will contribute in some way. Among young adults who live with their parents, 72% told Pew they contribute financially to the household. Of those, 65% help with expenses such as groceries or utilities, while 46% contribute toward rent or a mortgage.
Since families can have very different ideas about what that contribution should look like, discussing it openly can help draw the necessary boundaries. Guidance from Pennsylvania State University recommends talking about household duties, finances, schedules, and daily responsibilities when an adult child moves back home.
Clearly discussing these expectations can help everyone understand what is being asked of them and what they are responsible for.
When someone supports you, how much can they reasonably expect in return?
A person providing a home, food, or financial help may expect the person receiving that support to contribute in some way. Psychologists describe this as reciprocity: when someone does something helpful for us, it can create an expectation to return the favor in some way.
Even so, providing support doesn’t give someone unlimited control over the person receiving it. Being an adult does not mean you have no responsibilities toward the person helping you either. The key is knowing when an expectation is reasonable and when it starts to feel like entitlement, on both sides.
Entitlement can show up when someone feels they deserve better treatment or more consideration than the situation reasonably calls for. Psychologists have linked this thinking to exaggerated expectations, which can make ordinary requests feel unfair when they do not match what a person expects of themselves or others.
In a shared home, this can make disagreements over chores and other responsibilities harder to resolve. Someone may see a request as a normal part of living together, while the other may feel they are being asked for more than they should have to give. Ultimately, there should be a fair balance between support and responsibility.
So, what do you think? Is this a reasonable household arrangement, or did the situation cross a line somewhere? Share your take in the comments.
