Dr. Mariangela Hungria won the 2025 World Food Prize for a 40-year breakthrough at Embrapa. She developed a $2 bacterial seed treatment that lets crops absorb nitrogen from the air. This replaces $50 chemical fertilizers, saves farmers $25 billion annually, and cuts CO₂ emissions by 230 million metric tons, transforming over 40 million hectares of farmland.
