This photograph captures an extraordinary moment of everyday life continuing amid the devastation of lower Manhattan after September 11, 2001. Taken by photographer Jane Tyska on September 24, it shows a man and woman washing a heavy coating of grey dust from their black Mazda Miata convertible. 🚗
Behind them, enormous cranes rise above the skeletal remains of the World Trade Center, where recovery efforts were underway. The contrast between something as ordinary as cleaning a car and the destruction surrounding them became a striking image of New Yorkers trying to restore some sense of normal life in the aftermath of tragedy. 🕊️
