For the past four years I have been creating artwork that looks at the issue of pedophilia in the church. As a socially conscious artist I believe that the best art comments on society and makes the viewer feel something.
When news broke about the atrocities being committed by priests against innocent children I had such an intense reaction I didn’t know what to do so I went to the studio and started painting.
I felt such rage at the thought of what these children had been through at the hands of the very people they were supposed to be able to trust.
There is so much attention on the paedophile priests, but what of the children? Because their identities are often protected we never get to see their pain, it is hidden away as most personal suffering is. I want to ensure that we don’t forget the victims and that is what has motivated me to create more than one hundred paintings and drawings.
I hope people see my representations of these children and acknowledge what they’ve been through, what these priests have done to them, to ensure we don’t allow this abuse to continue.
