#iambeautiful: A Project Against Bullying

All of the girls featured in these photos have experienced bullying, or know someone who has. Despite differing religious beliefs, sexual orientations, and outward appearances, they came together for this shoot to take a stand against bullying.
This very real social issue has become an epidemic. Between 1 in 4 and 1 in 3 U.S. students say they have been bullied at school. Even more (1 in 2) U.S. teens say they have been cyber bullied.
Bullying.Needs.To.STOP.
Back in January, I began dreaming of a concept shoot that included teenage girls from completely different walks of life. The message of the session would be one of tolerance, inclusivity, and love of self. I have experienced bullying first hand, and wanted to create images that would send a message to other victims:
You are not alone.
I want to say one thing, and one thing only to my tormenters:
THANK YOU.
Your constant harassment was enough of a push to help me leave a job I didn't love, to pursue a passion that I do. Because of you, I am now a successful, profitable, and extremely happy photography business owner. Because of you, I decided to reach out to teens who face some of the same issues I faced- if only to show them how truly beautiful and special they are.
I thought I was helping the girls pictured below. But in truth, meeting and photographing them was cathartic for me. It gave me hope and some much needed peace.
It's time that we all take a stand against bullying, stereotypes, and labels. A person is more than their race, sexual orientation, religion, and gender. Let's make a promise to be more like these girls. Let's teach our children to look beyond the physical to see the beauty inside each and every one of us.
Remember… there IS enough kindness in this world to make a difference.
