I Wrote Software To Make New Portraits From Image Search Results

Face averaging is an old technique, pioneered by Francis Galton in the late nineteenth century, but it's become much easier and more popular in the digital age—sometimes it seems as though everyone's doing it now! Even so, I think it still has a lot of untapped potential. Just recently I wrote software that can create decent averages from hundreds upon hundreds of face pictures at a time. What's more, I set things up so that I could feed the results of Google image searches into it: search on an expression such as "astronaut" or "Kim Kardashian," and in a couple of hours it will spit out a corresponding portrait newly generated by an averaging algorithm. The challenge, as you might imagine, lies in choosing search terms that will make worthwhile pictures. Here are some of my favorites.

"Malala Yousafzai"

"Jimmy Carter"

"Jennifer Lawrence"

"Dalai Lama"

"Portrait of a Girl"

"Dia de los Muertos Face"

"Portrait of King," "Portrait of Queen"

"Bridal Veil"

"Bisque Doll"

"Portrait of an Old Man"

"Blonde," "Brunette," "Redhead"

"Drag Queen"

"Abaya"

"Medusa"

"Refugee"
