Imagine the scene.
You stand in the stadium tunnel, cameramen wheeling around you, press snapping photos from either side. You hear the buzz of 100,000 spectators pressing in from all sides of the tunnel. Your armour weighs heavily on your shoulders, your fists clenched in determination within your gauntlets. Your good friend and great rival Eric stands to your right, helmet under arm, staring straight ahead... In this moment, there is no friendship - only rivalry.
You hear the announcer's voice in the distance and you're ushered forward towards the tunnel mouth, where the deafening roar of the crowd cascades on to you like a mighty waterfall. You shake Eric's hand and turn left along the 'list', glancing up at the uncountable crowd and raising one arm in appreciation.
You claim your undefeated lance from the steward and climb the step ladder to the edge of the water lane - your close friend Ruba the killer whale is waiting. You step across and sit on her back - her body feels tense in the water & you sense her nerves. Whispering a calming word in her ear, you gently pat her back, feeling the tension melt away beneath you.
This is the moment you've both been waiting for. The opportunity of a lifetime. The chance to make history. You take a deep breath and put on your helmet.
"On your marks..."
In the distance you see Eric sitting astride his rhino as it paws impatiently at the ground. He doesn't know what's coming...
"Set..."
As you put your helmet grill down, the crowd's roar doubles and a sudden burst of adrenaline surges through your body and you raise your lance as you let out a war cry...
