A couple year ago I watch greek tv serial "The island" about some Leper island in Greece. Then I read the book. It was historical novel about big sufferings of greek people in 1903. After that I wanted to find out more and to see more. When I finally visited Spinalonga, I felt the same. I just wanted to see more and more. I've never though that I'll step in this island ever in my life. But I did! That experience I'll never forget in my life. It's priceless.
When I steped on island of Spinalonga for the first time, beautiful island across Plaka village on Creta island, I though - this is place where life doesn't exists. Place where nothing's changed in the last 50 years and nothing will change in the next 50 years. Place full of history and at the same time full of sadness. Place like "frozen in time".
The water which surrounds the island is so clear and so warm. As you walk around it, stop and hold your breath.
Spinalonga known as Leper island it's surrounded by the most beautifully clear, bright turquoise water. It became a leper colony in 1903, had a school and hospital.
The patients of Spinalonga were entitled to a small monthly allowance, which was often not enough to cover their food and medicine. They were living in a place like heaven which was like horror for them. Throught the tiny wholes in walls they watched their homes across the island. They were prohibited to leave the island. They were left here to die.
