I created four portraits each representing an intimate moment shared with a partner. Written on each image with a Sharpie are the four Ho'oponopono meditations: I love you, Please forgive me, I am sorry and Thank you. Coming from this ancient Hawaiian tradition, these phrases are used to exercise the concept of no-separation. There is no me and them, there is only we. There is no "in here" and "out there", we are all connected and what affects one affects all. If something is to heal outside of me I need to heal it inside of me first.
The visual style including the writing on the images provides a sense of nostalgia, a memory of a relationship that we had, that was good and nurturing for us but we lost because we did not take care for it enough to keep.
Each of these portraits represents a classical element: air, earth, water & fire. The woman represents nature. I am bringing our relationship with nature into an emotional frame of reference most of us can relate to from one end or the other: the pain of ending a good and nurturing relationship because of neglect. Let's reconsider our relationship with the environment. The pain of damaging that relationship will be nothing short of heartbreak. Let's our relationship with ourselves so we can heal our relationship with our environment. There is no separation.
