Life is interesting. We look at the world through filters. Some filters we inherit, others we create. Some filters put us in harmony with the world while others set us apart.
I've struggled with my vision as an artist for decades, wondering why my art seems to contradict my intrinsic belief that people should strive to make the world a better place and that as an artist my vision should yield those kinds of results.
For a long time I neglected my art because it is dark. It is not the kind of art that a socially conscious person should be making, yet it pours from my soul and onto my canvas as if having a life of it's own and demanding to be seen. In the end I find myself face to face with smirking demons staring back at me. I know that art does not have to be beautiful or share a message of hope, but at the same time I desperately want to create responsibly because there is enough sadness and pain in the world already.
Perhaps it has been my filters that have been preventing me from seeing the bigger picture, which is that sometimes the path to good feelings leads us through the darkness so that we can confront our fears and shame and sorrow and leave them behind. Ultimately, I hope that my artwork may be a catalyst of transformation in the lives of others as it has been in mine.
