My name ist Jacob, and in 2014 I documented the life of shelter dogs in a border district of Berlin.
Equipped with my analog Nikon, which's been loaded with a role of KodakPortra400, I visited the shelter once a week.
Due to the limited living space in Berlin, many dogs end up in the shelter, because they are not allowed in the new home of their previous owner.
So they end up in here, waiting years for someone, who will put a lot of time and effort in resocializing these poor little buddies, who have no idea, why they have been left by their owner.

The inner outlet

8m² of fresh air

this is no yawn

Everyone who has been to a shelter before can probably relate to the tension when facing this many dogs, literally crying for the attention of the people passing by every day.

Like he knows

I mainly focused on dogs, which had been hold captive for a couple of years.
It didn't last long..

It's been very hot that week, so the shelter decided to put a little pool in the inner outlet.
blind

I don't know if this one lost his eyesight before or after he went in the shelter. But does it matter?
paw

It somehow seemed like that they didn't even try to get any attention anymore, because they already knew that there's no one picking them up this day or another.
a box full of bones

The shelter isn't funded by the town or the state. It depends on donations and memberships by private activists.

Please share this project with as many people as possible, so hopefully the next time you or one of your friends decides to get a dog, it's maybe a shelter dog. You will not regret this.
