I Make Paper Sculptures Of Wildlife Creatures

Hello, my name is Kate and I make paper sculptures under the business name Kaper.
When I was a kid I was never any good at art, but I loved it so much I persevered. I always wanted to be an illustrator and my hero was Quentin Blake. I’ve never been much of a social butterfly and I am more comfortable voicing how I view the world on paper rather than through speech. A humble sheet of paper has endless possibilities and there’s something really lovely about that. I fell in love with printmaking on my art foundation course and all these years later (I’m 32) I’m still so excited by colors and mark making.
Each piece I make is one of a kind. I design a template with a ruler, protractor and some old school maths. I print them individually by hand, giving each creature its own unique colors, patterns and textures. Once built, I varnish them. Their design makes them really sturdy. I love making birds because they are such characterful and charming little creatures. I am always inspired by woodland adventures.
I spend my days in my studio at Manchester Craft and Design Center, where the walls are painted with trees and it looks rather like a colorful menagerie. It is my happy place and my fellow makers there keep me inspired and motivated. I work a lot to commission, often making bespoke baby mobiles and first anniversary gifts, since paper is the traditional gift for such an occasion. Being self-employed is hard work, but it is such a joy to work at what you love.
