I have been an avid collector and maker of bears and soft sculptures for years, but I wanted to take my art further than the standard teddy bear. So a couple of years ago I decided to make more realistic bears and animals. I started drawing my own patterns and used armatures to give the creations a natural range of movement.
Then I was approached to recreate an afghan puppy (Mason) for a family who had lost their dog at a very young age. The story of this poor puppy was heartbreaking and I knew that I had to get him right. I will be honest I cried a few times as I started to bring his features to life and wept buckets when they cried on receiving him. I know he can't replace Mason but if his just being there helps ease the pain then I've done my job.
There have been other dogs who I've cried over and some who I've laughed about but each make has been so special.
I have recreated; Elderly pets whose passing has left a massive hole in a families life, Life long companions whose owners can't face replacing and new companions for those who can no longer have a pet anymore.
I spend hours designing the pattern, sourcing the furs and sculpting the features. Every make is a complete one of a kind, but then so is ever pet.
