Our lives have changed dramatically over the last few months. Even with restrictions slowly beginning to ease, many of us are still spending more time at home to reduce the risk of contracting the Coronavirus.
With all of this time in our own space, we can examine how much rubbish we throw away on a daily basis. If you have decided you want to reduce your waste, there are a few things you can do:
Go Fresh!
Nothing beats fresh produce! Often you will find fruits, vegetables, and herbs come wrapped in layers of plastic, and you can eliminate this by growing your own. When you reach into your garden the flavours in your cooking will be enhanced, and your food will be free from harsh chemicals. Lemon, orange and lime trees are popular choices, and lettuce and herb varieties usually require minimal maintenance. Any excess can be swapped with friends and neighbours!
If you missed the “green thumb” gene but still want your fruits and vegetables to be fresh and plastic-free, there is an alternative. Your local greengrocer will usually have options straight from the farm, and can package your purchases in a reusable cardboard box.
Shop Differently
Buying in bulk can save you money, and reduce waste! For example, a box will be easier to recycle than the plastic which is commonly used to wrap individual items. When you shop you can make a conscious decision to choose products with minimal packaging, as well as those that are made from recycled materials. Say “no” to plastic bags and take your reusable alternatives wherever you go.
Fashion might not be something you associate with waste, but it does contribute significantly to what ends up in landfill. The clothing industry comes second in worldwide pollution, with oil the only thing keeping it from first place. If you have clothing you no longer wear, consider donating, selling, repairing, or upcycling! Buying vintage or preloved clothing can be a fun way to grab a bargain, and lets you be creative with your fashionable side.
Build Better
Building supply stores have done well during the COVID-19 pandemic. As we have spent more time at home, our DIY skills and desire for renovation have really taken centre stage. If you are renovating you may be wondering what to do with the items you don’t need.
Instead of throwing away materials such as old glass, fittings, fixtures, and bricks, you can sell or give them away. You will be amazed by what people will take, and you will get a good feeling out of helping someone else. Some stores will even take away old appliances and refurbish them when you buy a new one.
If you hire a professional to do any work for you, check what they do with unused building materials. For example, a demolition company may be able to recycle these materials and turn them into fill.
Reducing your waste is easy when you change your mindset. With a few new habits you will have less rubbish in your bin, and you will be doing your part to help the environment.
