You can machine stitch through them.

I don't know why it hadn't occurred to me before, but you can stitch through all kinds of papers and plastics. It's a neat way of collaging. I used the bits I liked most from landscape painting I'd abandoned, with different textures such as netting, tracing paper, tissue paper and acetate to create bright landscapes. The transparency of the materials creates a lovely effect like the clouds are passing over, casting shadows over the land.
