My 5-year-old is obsessed with all things Disney Cars. He decided he wanted to be Lightning McQueen for Halloween this year. There was only one problem, I couldn’t find any in stock anywhere to buy. I also had to be careful to meet restrictions set by his school such as it couldn’t interfere with sitting and regular daily activities.
So I did what I always do in these situations and sat down with paper and pencil and designed a pattern.
Then the 5 year old decided his little brother needed to be Mater so they could be a matching pair. It turns out Mater NEEDS a lot more details to look right which ended up evolving into a ton of top-stitching and printed out iron-on graphics to save time.
Originally I used blank iron-on fabric and colored it with fabric markers for McQueen but I made graphics pages to print out on iron-on transfer fabric after I finished the Lightning “prototype” to include in the pattern file for sale in my pattern shop so someone can reproduce this in a single afternoon.

Lightning and Mater, best buddies forever.

Lightning's backside. It could be more detailed but he still looks pretty cute coming and going.

Mater needed a lot of stitching to get all those necessary tow truck bits on there.
