I'm a crochet doll artist who loves music and miniature crochet. After crocheting carrots and rabbits for my kids when they were toddlers I wanted to take my crochet to another level.
So I started experimenting with my own ideas and crocheted dolls with my own designs. A colleague of mine was very intrigued by my dolls and asked if I could crochet one of her. I did it and it was quite successful.
After that I got the idea that I could fuse my love for crochet with my admiration for my musical idols. However, I wanted to make a doll of whom there wasn't already a doll, and I wanted to make something that had never been done before with crochet. So I made one of Neneh Cherry, a hip hop icon from the 80's who had a smash hit with "Buffalo Stance".
The doll is 17 cm tall and crocheted with 0.35 mm hook. The pattern is made from scratch and unique for Neneh Cherry. Everything is crocheted (incl the jacket and the adidas sneakers), except for the jewelry and hair. I have curled the hair 3 straws at a time and then sewed them on the head (3 straws at a time). I also built the concert stage to enhance Neneh Cherry and to really get that fierce hip hop vibe.
With my unique dolls I want to convey a feeling of boundlessness, playfulness and excitement for the unexpected. I want people to marvel at what you can create from crochet, and I want to inspire other crocheters to seek new paths in their creations.
Often no one reacts when I tell them that I crochet dolls, I imagine it sounds "untrendy" and that crochet is only for grandmothers. So I also hope that I can awaken people's curiosity and show the boundlessness in the craft.
To crochet one realistic miniature doll with sewing thread takes just over 1000 hours. And to be able to endure I must be really obsessed with my idol. In other words, it is love that keeps me going.
