Couples now realize the importance of wedding videography when it comes to wedding planning. Wedding videography will allow couples to relive the day repeatedly and share it with friends and family who could not attend the wedding in person. Here are ten things that videographers need to film a wedding effectively.
1. Multiple videographers
One wedding videographer may only be able to capture some wedding activities. For example, the preparation of the couple will be in different locations. Another reason for multiple videographers is that each videographer's shooting style can bring a unique perspective to what would otherwise be a single man's shot, which can keep wedding videography fresh and exciting.
2. Shots that show the wedding day activities and wedding party preparation. Couples don't only want to watch their wedding video; they also want to know what other wedding activities are happening while getting ready before the ceremony. Videographers must get shots of other wedding parties preparing, such as bridesmaids in separate hotel rooms or at home, groomsmen getting prepared together in a room, wedding rehearsal dinner, and wedding reception set up.
3. Two cameras during the wedding ceremony
There should be two cameras for every shot during the wedding: one wide-angle camera that points toward everyone (to capture the wedding party, parents and guests) and one camera that zooms in on the wedding couple (to capture wedding vows and rings). It's also good to have a third camera recording any wedding ceremony activities or events outside of what the other cameras capture.
4. One video for each guest at the wedding reception
The videographer should provide every guest with their wedding day memories by creating one DVD for each wedding guest containing all their special wedding days moments such as profile videos, speeches, dance floor footage, and much more. This way, everyone feels like they were part of the wedding festivities even though not everyone could enjoy it in person.
5. Pre-wedding interviews
Couples want wedding videography that is more than just a wedding highlight video. Pre-wedding interviews allow wedding couples to get to know their wedding videographer in a fun and memorable way by asking them questions. When they first met, what was wedding planning like for them; Any good wedding video will convey the couple's story.
6. Shots of wedding rings and wedding rings exchanges
Rings are significant to the bride and groom and their families because of the significance of exchanging wedding rings during their wedding ceremony: they symbolize their eternal love for one another and willingness to spend the rest of their lives together. Wedding videographers need to capture wedding ring exchanges in a way that shows how meaningful it is for wedding couples and their wedding guests.
7. Shots of wedding vows/vows exchanges
Wedding vows are one of the most critical parts of any wedding ceremony because they document the wedding couple's promise to each other before God and all of their guests. While wedding videography can never fully capture how deep and meaningful wedding vows are, videographers need to try and convey some sense of this with close-up shots—capturing facial expressions at crucial moments during the wedding vow exchange. Some wedding videographers will also capture wedding vows from a camera pointed at the wedding couple but hidden from their view so that wedding vows don't feel staged or forced.
8. Shots of wedding reception toasts and wedding dance floor footage
Wedding receptions are filled with happy guests having fun on the dance floor, eating delicious food, dancing with wedding party members, congratulating the wedding couple, and socializing with one another. There should be plenty of wedding video shots of these beautiful elements throughout the wedding reception; wedding videography needs to document every reception aspect. This part of the night will show the guest having a great time and is always a great way to end a wedding video.
9. Wide shots from the wedding ceremony
Wedding videography needs to capture wedding ceremonies from various angles and wide shots. It allows wedding couples, guests and the wedding videographer to see what everyone is doing at a given moment. There can be a sensory overload during the ceremony with so many things going on simultaneously, especially when it comes to longer-term wedding ceremonies. The wider shot helps out tremendously. Wedding videographers should also capture close-up footage of wedding vows and critical moments such as ring exchanges (videographers may need multiple cameras for this task).
10. Shots of wedding reception exits
Wedding videography should capture wedding couples exiting their wedding ceremony and then wedding guests congratulating them as they walk into the wedding reception with everyone cheering for them.
11. Video coverage of the wedding couple's first dance
Their wedding day is about celebrating a union that will last a lifetime. What better way to start this off than watching the wedding couple have a tender moment on their own under a sea of twinkling lights from chandeliers or hanging lanterns at their wedding reception? Wedding videographers need to consider using special lighting techniques, such as backlighting during this moment, at least once to make it truly memorable. It will make for the video footage!
