When A Simple Road Trip Turns Into A Life-Changing Decision
Have you ever gone on a trip and come back with the feeling that your “normal life” no fits anymore?
That’s exactly what happened to us.
A few years ago, my partner and I had everything society tells you is “success”: a beautiful house, a luxury car, good jobs, and a very structured life. On paper, it was perfect.
But every time we escaped for a few days in a rented camper van, something inside us shifted. The freedom of waking up to new landscapes, the simplicity of living with less, the thrill of the unknown — it all made us question what we really wanted.
The more we traveled, the harder it became to return to our old routine. Until one day, we decided to stop dreaming and start living differently.
Selling It All — And Embracing Uncertainty
Leaving behind a stable life is not an easy decision. We spent months discussing it, making lists of pros and cons, trying to imagine every scenario. What if it all went wrong? What if we regretted it?
But one question kept coming back: What if we don’t try?
In the summer of 2024, we finally took the leap. We sold our house. We sold the car. We packed up only what truly mattered and invested in a camper van.
And just like that, Destino Camper was born — a project where we document our new life on the road through our blog.
But there was another passion we weren’t ready to leave behind: urban exploration. For years, we’ve been fascinated by exploring abandoned places — forgotten mansions, empty hospitals, ghost towns. That’s how we also created our YouTube channel: Destino Urbex, where we share our urbex adventures with thousands of viewers.
And now? We combine both passions: living on the road and seeking out hidden places across Europe.
When The Dream Hits Reality: A Rocky Start
Of course, Instagram-worthy vanlife wasn’t exactly how our story began. In fact, the first chapter was a nightmare.
The van conversion we paid for turned out to be a disaster: gas leaks, dangerous electrical faults, unstable furniture — it was unlivable. We spent weeks stuck in industrial parks and workshops, pouring money and energy into fixing what should have been done right.
It was a test of patience, resilience, and sheer willpower. Many would have given up. But after months of fighting to get our van roadworthy (with the help of a skilled camper builder who stepped in), we were finally ready.
The first night truly on the road, parked beside a remote lake, we looked at each other and smiled. We made it.
Life On The Road: More Than Just Beautiful Sunsets
Since then, life has been a mix of unforgettable moments and constant learning.
One day we’re cooking dinner with the doors open to a mountain view. The next, we’re hunting for a laundromat in the rain or fixing something that broke (again).
What vanlife teaches you — beyond minimalism — is adaptability. You stop expecting perfection. You learn to live in the present.
We also soon realized that the “Instagram version” of vanlife isn’t always helpful to new travelers. That’s why on Destino Camper, we share both sides of this lifestyle: the beautiful moments and the difficult realities — from honest reviews of gadgets to personal stories about overcoming challenges on the road.
Blending Vanlife With Urbex: A Unique Journey
One thing that sets our journey apart is that we don’t just chase pretty spots for the sake of it.
We’re passionate about urban exploration — seeking out forgotten places and uncovering the stories they hold.
Wherever we travel, we’re constantly researching abandoned locations. We’ve explored eerie hospitals in Portugal, centuries-old mansions hidden in Spanish forests, entire villages left behind after disasters.
Through our channel Destino Urbex
we’ve built a growing community of people fascinated by these hidden histories.
And now, living full-time in our van gives us the perfect base to pursue this passion across borders — we can follow the trail of a story wherever it leads us.
The Truth About Working On The Road
Many people ask: “But how do you make a living?”
It’s not as simple as opening a laptop by the beach. Vanlife comes with constant logistics: finding stable internet, managing time between travel and work, adapting to unpredictable conditions.
We’ve built a flexible online income — creating content for Destino Camper, growing our YouTube channels, collaborating with brands that align with our lifestyle, and building digital products that help other travelers.
It’s far from passive. It takes planning, discipline, and creativity. But it gives us something far more valuable than a salary: freedom.
What Vanlife And Urbex Have Taught Us
The past year has transformed us in ways we never imagined.
We’ve learned to live with less — and value experiences over things.
We’ve learned to be resourceful — because when something breaks in the middle of nowhere, you have to figure it out.
We’ve learned to embrace uncertainty — every day on the road brings new surprises.
But most of all, we’ve learned the power of following your passions — even when the path is scary or unconventional.
For us, Destino Camper and Destino Urbex are more than projects. They’re expressions of a life we consciously chose — one that continues to evolve every single day.
Thinking About Taking The Leap?
If you’re reading this and dreaming of a different life, here’s our honest advice:
It’s not all easy. It’s not always romantic. But it’s worth it — if it’s truly what you want.
Prepare well. Expect challenges. Stay flexible. Stay curious.
Who knows — maybe we’ll meet on a remote mountain road or in the crumbling halls of an abandoned palace. 🚐🏚️✨
