It is not only during the holidays that trips out of town with a four-legged pet are a pleasant way to spend leisure time. However, it turns out that few drivers know how to properly transport a dog or cat in a car.
So how do you ensure both your own safety and that of your pet? Although the law does not provide specific rules for transporting animals in cars, it is important to use common sense and remember a few simple rules.
A dog on the passenger seat, on the rear seat, on the shelf above the boot or even on the dashboard who among us has not encountered such a sight. Often, owners do not realise how much of a danger their tiny pet is moving freely around the cabin of the car.
Suffice it to mention that already in a collision at 64 km/h the overload reaches 30 g. This means that even a small, five-kilogram dog, when the car collides with an obstacle, will move like an object weighing about 30 times more, which gives us as much as 150 kilograms! And where such a projectile will hit is impossible to predict.
However, it is easy to imagine what consequences such an event would have not only for the animal itself, but also for its fellow passengers, both adults and children. It is no use explaining that the dog is calm during the journey, as random situations are unpredictable. It is therefore worth putting safety first.
The dangers of sudden braking or a collision are not the only reasons to take a few moments to prepare for a journey with a dog. It is also important to bear in mind that an animal tolerates driving much less well than a human. A sudden noise or flash of lights may be all it takes for a dog lying politely on the passenger's seat to get frightened and jump on the driver's lap or, worse, under the driver's legs, blocking the opportunity to use the pedals quickly.
Pets can be transported in both the passenger and luggage compartments. Smaller dogs can be secured with the special harnesses available on the market, which are attached to the seat belts. Larger dogs will certainly be safer in the boot, especially in estate cars, where we can fit a special cage. A dog travelling in this way will not harm itself or other passengers in an emergency situation.
While it may seem that the metal structure is not very comfortable and imposes uncomfortable positions, let us not forget that, when driving, safety is our first concern. And this solution serves just such a purpose.
And what about cats? Here, so-called carriers are the best solution. In an enclosed space, a purr can lie down comfortably and feel safe and secure, and thanks to special openings it has constant access to fresh air. Remember to fasten such a carrier with a safety belt.
Once your pet is used to this type of travel, car journeys will not be a problem.
