My grandmother, Radmila Mimica, was suffering from borderline depression when we finally convinced her to start using a smartphone. It would be a way for her to keep in touch, read things that interest her, and a safety measure in case she ever needed assistance, even if the former teacher—now in her seventies—was convinced she would probably lose or break the device before she learned how to use it. At first we didn’t hear much from Gran, and guessed the phone was sitting in a drawer somewhere, collecting dust. But when surreal images of elephant figurines started to appear on Facebook, it became apparent that the device was being used after all, just not in the way we had ever imagined.
After inheriting a huge collection of elephant collectibles from her sister, my grandmother had not only started visually cataloguing them, but creating whimsical scenes and displays that brought them to life. Over one hundred photos later, a surreal and beautiful aspect of my grandmother’s creativity has been revealed to the world through social media, and friends and fans now eagerly await each new instalment. I guess you could say my grandmother puts the ‘art’ in ‘smartphone’.
