Couple Uses Their “Baby” To Break Hotel Rules, Manager Discovers What’s Really In Their Stroller

Working at a hotel front desk is not for the faint of heart. From dealing with demanding guests to sorting out last-minute problems, employees have to put up with a lot. And no matter how long you’ve been in the business, you never quite know what kind of situation you’ll find yourself in next.

One hotel manager encountered a suspicious couple who expected special treatment because they had a baby with them. But their stroller looked strange, and something about their story didn’t quite add up. Eventually, the truth came out, and things took an unexpected turn.

Running a hotel comes with its fair share of risks. You’re essentially welcoming strangers into your property, giving them a room, and trusting they’ll behave themselves.

Most guests are perfectly pleasant, but others might drink too much, throw wild parties, or leave their rooms in a terrible state. And then there are those who deliberately use hotels for illegal activities, which can create serious problems for the people working there.

Of course, guests don’t necessarily have to be troublemakers to make an employee’s day difficult. Someone who’s just spent hours traveling might arrive exhausted and irritated, only to find that their room isn’t ready or their reservation has gone missing.

A small inconvenience can turn into an argument, and the person behind the front desk is usually the one expected to sort everything out.

Unfortunately, unpleasant encounters are fairly common in hospitality. A 2024 report by Scotland’s Fair Work Convention found that 42% of surveyed hospitality workers had experienced bullying or harassment at work in the previous year. Nearly a third, 30%, said they’d experienced it from customers specifically.

And things can get much worse than someone complaining about a room. A study of hospitality workers in Greece found that 85% of participants had experienced or witnessed some form of mistreatment. Verbal and psychological harassment were the most common, but employees also reported incidents involving racism and physical violence.

What makes this particularly troubling is that many workers feel they have little choice but to put up with such behavior. In the same Greek study, only around 35% of those who had experienced or witnessed such incidents reported them to someone in authority.

Researchers found that employees often stayed silent because they feared losing their jobs or doubted their managers would do anything about it.

Experienced hotel workers know how important that support can be. In an interview with Travelbook, hotel manager André Schmidt explained that demanding guests are part of the business, and staff generally try to accommodate them.

However, he draws the line at dishonesty and aggressive behavior. He said he’d encountered guests making racist remarks and even threatening violence, and learned to take a firm stance in such situations.

Some of the situations hotel employees find themselves in are genuinely frightening. Hospitality training expert Stephanie Coradin told Hertelier about a front desk employee who was spat at because a guest refused to pay a deposit.

In another incident, a hotel manager was threatened with a gun after refusing to refund a guest whose room required extensive cleaning. Police had to remain outside the property for several days because staff feared the man might return.

Stories like these show why it’s so important for hotel employees to know their managers have their backs. They shouldn’t have to feel unsafe at work or worry that standing up to a difficult guest will cost them their job. And when a situation gets out of control, having someone willing to step in can make all the difference.

The hotel manager in this Reddit story initially went out of their way to accommodate the couple, reducing their deposit and finding a solution that would still leave them money for food. They clearly explained the conditions and gave the guests an opportunity to enjoy their stay.

Unfortunately, the couple took advantage of that kindness and eventually became hostile toward restaurant staff. At that point, the manager stood up for their colleagues and refused to tolerate any more mistreatment.

Judging by the response in the comments, plenty of readers agreed with that decision. After all, paying for a hotel room doesn’t give anyone permission to treat the people working there however they please.
