ANTWERP 18/07/2019 - Take a look at the new art project of Matthieu Bout, a stunning series of miniature images of downtown Hong Kong. The tagline – Hong Kong, small city, big people – says it all and tells a story of how city life is only made possible by the people who live in it.
This is Hong Kong like you’ve never seen before. These pictures, made by art photographer Matthieu Bout, have reduced this Metropolis into a miniature city which gives it a whole new perspective.
The artist is one of Belgium’s most popular city photographers. After a previous series of brilliant city views, Matthieu has now mastered the art of miniature photography with a technique called ‘tilt shift’. This technique uses a special lens that actually tilts and shifts. This way there’s an area on the image which is in focus while the rest is rather blurry. And with some small color adjustments, it’s like the Hong Kong reality is transformed into a Märklin-world.
‘Hong Kong is simply breath-taking. I’ve never been in a Metropolis this big, but it’s a scenery I’m going to want to start chasing,’ Matthieu says. ‘It’s amazing how millions of people living on such a small area have somehow established order in the chaos. There are quite a few things we can learn from this in Europe and I’m glad I could capture some of it on film.’
During his trip, Matthieu took about 20.000 pictures. Out of this series follows a selection which will be published in his new art book, but we can already give you a sneak peek. Enjoy!
