Y-Fi, short for Ypsi Fidelity, is a social art movement that started out of a vision that our students in a largely urban school district, deserved to have the same art, photo, social and cultural exposure other students in nearby districts did. That hope came true when we were awarded the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation grant this past December. With the $25,000 we've been able to meet with Ypsilanti Community High School students weekly, educate them about performance art or 4-D time based arts and assist in their monthly productions in public spaces. The student artists are charged with making decisions on logistics, documenting through photography, and staging areas to be ready for creating dazzling results.
The most recent event took place at Eastern Michigan University's bustling and bright Student Center. The happening, aptly named éclat (meaning conspicuous success) challenged the public to break stereotypes and expectations by writing a statement about themselves that someone might not guess by looking at them, and then standing in for a photo taken by Y-Fi students. The results were unexpected and dramatic.
