4. Pacific Coast Highway by The Beach Boys (That’s Why God Made The Radio, 2012)
I have been through a lot in 45 years on the planet. Growing up in a emotionally abusive family environment, bullied by both some of my fellow classmates and teachers, and largely ignored by other students, I was an incredibly lonely child growing up. In college I managed to get into a relationship with a woman, but not just any woman. She was a deeply insecure and troubled woman who was obsessed with having sex all the time and if you didn’t want to she would openly question your sexuality. Several times during our nearly two decade relationship she was physically, emotionally, and sexually abusive and even sexually assaulted me on occasion. The fact my family thought she was the greatest thing in the world only made things worse.
These four songs helped me get through these times incredibly tough times. Though the wounds are still very deep I am beginning to heal. The fact that I am still alive at this point can be attributed these songs, and others by The Beach Boys, as well as working on my PhD in history as they provided a means of escape from my miserable existence.
