Being a librarian, I want to know people are still interested in reading books. Tell me what you learned to read on first. No judgement, I swear. BTW, my husband and I I both learned to read on GO, DOG, GO by P.D. Eastmann.

I was 3. My mom was always reading me this Winnie the Pooh book so I memorized it and sounded out the words from there. Once I could read that, I was able to read more stuff. My first real book was The Odyssey by Homer. Took me a long time to understand it but I read that book over and over for years until it fell apart. I also filled out a subscription card from a Highlights magazine in my mom’s name to get Dr. Seuss books.

I taught myself how to read Hop on Pop by Dr. Seuss when I was in preschool. I had a cassette of it and a general understanding of how reading was supposed to work, and adults who read to me typically pointed along the text as they read, so I managed to put it together listening to the cassette and following along on the pages.
I was also very good at memorizing narration/dialogue/etc. (I could recite my favorite movie as a toddler) so I don’t know if it was immediately apparent I had figured out how to read until I started recognizing words in other contexts.
