In school we were taught that it happened in South Africa and the whites were being extremely racist against the blacks. I think segregation was going on as well. The un eventually decided to put a sanction against the country until South Africa resolved the issue

Basically what Stardust said, that’s what I was taught too. But recently I started learning about apartheid from the perspective of the UN’s definition of the crime of apartheid. From this definition, the apartheid in South Africa becomes an extreme example of it, and people also use it to describe Israeli control of the West Bank.
