He Crashed His Car Into A Ditch And Spent 47 Minutes On The Phone — Then Something Happened That Investigators Still Can’t Explain

When 19-year-old Brandon Swanson crashed his car into a roadside ditch near Minnesota West Community and Technical College in May 2008, his first instinct was to call his parents for help. As they tried to determine his whereabouts, the teenager described his surroundings and began making his way toward what he believed was the nearest town. He was cutting through fields and climbing fences to save time. Roughly 47 minutes into the exchange, though, his father, Brian, heard him shout an expletive. Moments later, the connection was severed. No one ever heard from Brandon again. “You know people don’t vanish into thin air. But it sure seems like he did.” The haunting observation from his mother, Annette, best captures the mystery surrounding his disappearance — one that investigators fail to explain more than 18 years later. As Brandon’s family continues their search for him, his case has helped bring changes to Minnesota’s missing-persons statute. He graduated from high school in 2007 and went on to study wind energy at the aforementioned college in Canby. Friends described Brandon as sociable, while his family knew him as someone who remained close to his parents. This is why, rather than move into student housing, he continued to live at home and commute to college. Nothing about his life suggested that he was preparing to walk away from it. The group later traveled to Canby, where they continued spending time together. Liquor was present, but his friends did not describe Brandon as severely intoxicated when he left. His drive from Canby to Marshall should have been routine, following Minnesota State Highway 68. However, for reasons that remain unclear, he chose a rural route that led him away from regular traffic and familiar landmarks. Before long, he became lost. Brian and Annette rushed to his aid, while staying connected on the phone. But despite searching for one another for hours, neither side could locate the other. Frustration mounted, and at one point, Brandon hung up. When his mother called back, however, he answered, and this time, he suggested they meet at a well-known nightclub he believed he could reach on foot. At the time, there seemed to be nothing particularly ominous about the situation. A young man had damaged his car and was trying to make his way back. Brian called back, and Annette tried as well. Brandon’s phone remained active for some time, but he did not answer. There was no explanation for the abrupt interruption. His exclamation could have been a reaction to something as ordinary as a fall. Or perhaps he had seen something that frightened him — an animal or another person. Annette later characterized the response as being told that “Brandon had a right to be missing because he was an adult.” It was not until the afternoon of that day that law enforcement began acting on the report of the disappearance. Investigators traced Brandon’s last known activity to an area near Taunton, along the Lincoln-Lyon County line. There, they found his vehicle. The doors were open. The keys were missing. His mother’s intuition immediately told her that something was wrong. “Maybe I’m a terrible mother for this, I don’t know, but I felt very early on — before the first 24 hours were up — that something terribly wrong had happened,” she told the St. Paul Pioneer Press in 2015. Reddit Brandon was last known to be wearing jeans, a blue-striped polo shirt, a black hooded sweatshirt, a white Minnesota Twins baseball cap, wire-rimmed glasses, and a sterling silver chain necklace. He had his phone, wallet, and house keys with him. None of those belongings were recovered from the crash site or surrounding area. The missing phone was particularly significant. Had investigators found it, they might have been able to determine where Brandon went after leaving his vehicle. There were also no confirmed footprints that established a clear path from the vehicle to the final location. The challenge was no longer simply finding Brandon. Investigators had to determine where, across a vast rural landscape, he could have gone. Search manager Ken Anderson later explained that the search covered 122 square miles. Ground crews scoured open fields, abandoned properties, and nearby waterways while aircraft conducted aerial searches. Then came the dogs. A canine team followed a scent believed to belong to Brandon from nearby houses toward the Yellow Medicine River. The finding gave investigators a new theory: Had Brandon fallen into the channel? Cold water, strong currents, thick vegetation and muddy banks could make it possible for someone to fall and disappear without a trace. During searches along the river, Lyon County Sheriff Joel Dahl was convinced investigators were close to finding Brandon. “If I had to lay any money down, I’d say we’re missing him somewhere in the water,” he said. “He’s in the eddy somewhere, being held down by a log. He’s got to be here. Everything is consistent that he was walking and something happened to him.” Lincoln County Sheriff Jack Vizecky also considered a river accident the most likely explanation. Even after the initial search produced nothing, therefore, he continued walking sections of the river. “I would like to bring some closure to the family,” he said. He believed the cold water could delay the body’s surfacing. But no recovery was ever made. And the canine evidence that had helped direct investigators toward the river was not as definitive as it initially appeared. Cold and Missing “What happens in the middle of a field where it’s moist? Water sits there, then goes through the farmer’s tile and ends up somewhere three-quarters of a mile away,” Anderson explained. “So how do you make the connection from scent being indicated in the water environment and still be able to locate it back to the source, where the scent is captured by a canine?” Marisa Tuel/Unsplash (not the actual photo) The problem was compounded by shifting winds. A scent originating in one location could be carried elsewhere, deposited and moved again as weather conditions changed. “If you have three days of scent going up and depositing and the wind stays consistent, you’d have a straight line of scent,” Anderson said. “But if the wind changes 45 degrees every day, you’d have a zigzag line.” The explanation did not eliminate the possibility that Brandon had entered the river. But it meant investigators could not treat the canine trail as proof of where he had gone. While the search for him remained active, his parents pushed Minnesota lawmakers to pass Brandon’s Law in 2009. Signed by Governor Tim Pawlenty, the legislation expanded the state’s missing-person statutes to include potentially endangered adults. Under the law, authorities were required to accept a complaint of disappearance without delay, regardless of age. They were also required to begin an immediate preliminary investigation, notify relevant agencies, and establish which department would take the lead. If the missing person was not located within 30 days, authorities were instructed to seek additional identifying information, including DNA samples, dental records, X-rays, photographs and fingerprints. Annette described the change as necessary in a 2014 interview with the Marshall Independent. “There had been a lot of work done with children, which is great, but when our children become adult children — because we’re all somebody’s child — there wasn’t as much protection or help for families with adult children situations,” she said. “It shouldn’t matter whether your child is 18, 25, or 30.” CNN Although the official search for Brandon concluded in October 2011, his parents continued working with volunteer groups to locate him, refusing to consider the case closed. During periods of drought, they returned to portions of the watershed. At their home, a porch light became a symbol of their refusal to accept that their son was gone. “That morning when we left, we turned the porch light on for him. Well, we haven’t turned it off since. We’re leaving it on till he comes home,” Annette said. She also asked her neighbors to join them. “Turn your porch lights on for him and light his way.” InForum Every May 14 brought renewed attention to Brandon’s disappearance. On the fifth anniversary, reports noted that the porch light was still burning and that his parents continued to believe their son deserved answers. By the ninth anniversary, Anderson was still working to refine search strategies. “We are not giving up,” he said. “We just have to be smarter where we look.” A year later, Brian offered another possibility. “Maybe somebody found him, and they’re taking care of him, and they don’t know he’s missing,” he said. It has been not knowing what happened to him. “They call it ambiguous loss,” she said. “The not-knowing where a loved one is. You’re left in a constant state of searching, whether it’s searching your mind, searching your heart, searching your soul, or searching a physical location. It’s brutal.” FBI She has also continued advocating for greater support for families of missing people, arguing that they need someone who can help them navigate an investigation while they are coping with shock and grief. “Every family that has a missing person should be appointed an advocate or liaison to bridge that communication between law enforcement and that family, who just want answers.” “You’re full of grief, shock and anger, so you’re not processing well anyway. Your ability to express yourself is also hindered, so to have an advocate to bridge that gap, in my opinion, is crucial,” she told the Marshall Independent in 2015. As of August 2026, Brandon’s disappearance remains unresolved, with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Lyon and Lincoln County sheriff’s offices continuing to list the investigation as active. The FBI’s ViCAP alert also remains in place, seeking information that could help determine what happened to him.
