We discussed the comics further with Czap and asked him to share more about his idea-generation process. He told us: “Sometimes they pop into the brain fully formed and I just have to pull it out. Most of the time you just let the brain thoughts run unfiltered. Then when some word/phrase/idea makes me laugh, I try to think of a good context to frame it.”
When asked about the specific elements he finds most effective in creating humor in his work, Matt responded: “I’m always trying to improve to make my comics better. Recently I’ve been making more revisions, trying to make my compositions better, and being more economical with words. I think it’s helped enhance the humor of the strips.”
The cartoonist kindly shared which of his own comics is his personal favorite: “A couple months ago I made this comic that is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland with a huge vehicle called the ‘Murdermobile.’ I normally do NOT enjoy drawing cars or other vehicles, but I really enjoyed drawing this one. Maybe because it’s fictional and I could make it look however I wanted?”
Lastly, Matt shared what aspects of being a comic artist he finds the most rewarding: “It’s rewarding to be drawing at a level that would impress my younger self. I think that’s always the goal. When a comic ‘does numbers’ and other people share it, that also feels really great. I want to be making comics that people enjoy! So really I’m making cartoons for two people, me and everyone else.”
