Despite all of the challenges that come along with it, being a woman can be so special in so many ways. Men will never understand the joy of being in a ladies’ room at a bar or club with a bunch of drunk women who instantly treat you like you’ve been best friends for years. Or when you’re in need of a tampon and a random stranger immediately offers one up.
Something that’s so beautiful about being a woman is the sisterhood that you get to experience with others. But Chrissy Stockton at Thought Catalog notes that there are plenty of other perks too. First, she points out that women don’t have the pressure on them that men do to conceal their emotions. It’s socially acceptable for us to cry when we need to and express openly how we feel.
In the same vein, there are so many beautiful bonding experiences that women can have together. Yes, men can go get pedicures together and gossip about their relationships too. But it’s much more common for women to do this, and experiences like these are so nourishing.
Plus, there are little perks that can come along with being a woman, such as having men open doors for you. Again, women are perfectly capable of opening doors themselves, and men aren’t always obligated to do this. But if we have to deal with sexism, violence against women, and the gender pay gap, we have to celebrate the little wins when we can.
Now, we all know that there are some less-than-ideal aspects of living in a female body. Having a period is never fun, and being pregnant and giving birth takes a huge toll on a person’s body. However, there are some bright sides too. For example, women live an average of five to 10 years longer than men. Women actually have stronger immune systems than men as well.
Something else that’s amazing about being a woman is that you have stronger senses than your male peers. Women tend to have stronger taste buds and a more powerful sense of smell than men. We even often have better vision, better hearing, and are more sensitive to touch. This explains why it seems like men don’t see as many colors as women, because often, they actually can’t!
Of course, there are certain aspects of being a woman that make life harder. Unfortunately, there is still a lot of violence perpetrated against women every single day, and the intense beauty standards that we’re expected to meet are extremely unreasonable. It can be exhausting to be a woman when you’re criticized for every move you make, how you look, what you say, and more. The expectations that society puts on women are immense.
That’s why it’s so important for women to have each other. Bonding with your fellow girls can be extremely therapeutic. And the depth of female friendships can be impossible or nearly impossible for many men to understand. Despite all of the difficulties of being a girl or a woman in society, having hilarious memes and communities (on or offline) that remind you that you’re not alone can make it all worth it.
